Sustainable September

Program Background and Leadership

Background

In 2006, the Kirkland Chamber united key business and community leaders to discuss issues relating to the concepts of environmental sustainability and responsible economic growth. From our discussions, it became clear that a forum was needed to further explore and develop this important relationship. With the support of local stakeholders, organizations, and businesses we concluded that East King County, Washington could be a leader in the promotion and implementation of Green business objectives, programs and resources.

We decided to focus our efforts around a month-long program of learning targeting both businesses and consumers and branded the experience, Sustainable September. We are pleased to announce that given the success of our 2007 Sustainable September pilot program, the Washington State Department of Ecology has made an even greater commitment to this year’s event and provided additional grant money. The Kirkland Chamber of Commerce is proud to once again help direct, grow and manage this outstanding program.

For 2008, our year long program with a focus on the month of September will reach a greater share of businesses and organizations that are interested in green business practices and reach an increased number of consumers who want to learn more about sustainable products, services and programs. This is an opportunity to reach both Eastside businesses and consumers with your eco-messages, programs, services and products.

We are targeting a significant share of businesses and residents in Kirkland and other communities in East King County. Our marketing and communication efforts will include a dynamic web page, newspaper articles, municipal mailings, compelling collateral materials and other public relations efforts.
